Customizing Your Vape Experience: How Coils and Tanks Affect Your Puff

For some of us, vaping starts nice and straightforward. But when you actually learn how coils and tanks work, you realize just how much control over the experience you actually have! From flavor to vapor, to throat hit. It’s all adjustable if only you set it up right!

Let’s start with coils.

Your coil is the heart of your vape, the bit that heats up your e-liquid and defines how it all feels. One of the biggest differences there is today, is mesh coil vs regular coil.

Mesh coils are made from a much larger surface area. So your e-liquid heats more evenly which gives you smoother vapor, and “smoother” flavor experience. That’s why most modern disposable vapes use mesh (and why most newer devices use it too). If you want bangin’ flavor and consistent performance over time, mesh is the new way to go.

Regular coils, while less complicated and lower-cost, absolutely get the job done too in most instances. They can often feel more “blurry” on the flavor, and the performance can trail off pretty quickly with heavy use, however.

Resistance is also a big factor.

Sub ohm meaning lower resistance means all the things you think it does; more vapor, stronger flavor, but that means you’re guzzling through e-liquid and battery. More resistance means more of a controlled experience, a slightly tighter draw, and a draw more similar to that of smoking a cigarette. This is often more familiar territory to starter vapers or those that have just switched from smoking.

Anyway, now on to tanks.

If you’re using an open system, (pod system or tank) you need to consider your tank design. This can affect both the airflow characteristics and how tight the overall draw feels to you. More airflow = looser draw and bigger clouds, less airflow = tighter draw and stronger throat hit. Adjustable airflow tanks give flex and variability, fixed systems for (disposables) will usually be designed for simplicity and consistent performance.

Another factor is e-liquid compatibility.

Some coils are better suited for the “higher” VG liquids, or are thicker and produce thicker clouds and some are designed for more balanced or higher PG liquids, build for stronger throat hit and lighter vapor. Using the wrong combination can lead to poor performance and taste burnt!

So how do you actually customize your experience?

Want stronger flavor? Choose mesh coil + balanced airflow

Want smoother hits? Slightly higher resistance + moderate airflow

Want more vapor? Lower resistance coil + more open airflow

Want something simple? A well-designed disposable with mesh coil and consistent airflow already does most of this for you!

Before you get too terribly confused, it is important to mention, there’s no definitive best setup. It’s all to do with how you personally like to vape!

Understanding these things it, will help you avoid unnecessary stones in your road and get some consistently solid performance out of whatever you choose to use!
